10 Underrated Cards for EDH

Sometimes a certain card in the 99 just exceeds all expectations when you play it. Either due to specific deck synergies or just because the card is just inherently good while still fairly under the radar. Below we list our selection for underrated cards in EDH:

Duelist’s Heritage

Mono white is a difficult thing to play in commander, but this 2W enchantment not only turns your Mono white commander (Sram, Light Paws) into a double strike powerhouse; it also works as a political tool to aid your opponents. Which Gruul player can say no to free double strike against a common enemy when it doesn’t cost them anything?

Plumb the Forbidden

Black loves to generate card advantage through sacrifice and life loss. This uncommon does it at instant speed and for 1B. Sacrifice as many creatures as you can afford to lose and copy this spell for each unfortunate pawn you’ve lost. This works with effects like magecraft, making it all the while more interesting. Try it with Extus, Oriq Overlord in Mardu, or double it up with an Archmage Emeritus or a with Witherbloom Apprentice.

Viridian Revel

In a meta with Food, Clue, Treasure and Powerstone tokens, this 1GG enchantment makes sure you keep up with the creeping tempo of Docksides, Gnawbones and Urzas! Card advantage is king in EDH so what’s not to like?

Containment Construct

Nobody likes discarding cards, but this little uncommon has become the leading draw engine for red decks outside of casting spells out of exile. This 2 mana artifact Construct provides the perfect synergy, allowing you to cast discarded cards from exile, providing that precious edh commodity: Value.

Mystic Reflection

This two mana instant is extremely versatile – both on the offense as the defense. You can transform your opponent’s Korvold, Fae-Cursed King in a mana dork or transform your tokens into whopping monsters.

Warping Wail

A colorless instant with multiple good modes. Exiling a creature with power/toughness less than one or countering a sorcery is just great value, especially for decks that do not include blue. Truly one of those underrated EDH cards that need more love.

Cleansing Meditation

We all know enchantments are very powerful in EDH. This sorcery sweeps the entire board for you, deleting these pesky enchantments for just 3 mana value. You can even turn this into a one sides board wipe with thresh hold, which for some deck is quite easy to achieve. Powerful and versatile and just an uncommon.

Vohar, Vodalian Desecrator

This is a cousin of Merfolk Looter, with considerable upside. The lifegain and lifedrain itself are just “nice to haves”, however, the ability to recur any sorcery or instant from your graveyard again is very valuable. This two mana loot engine just flies under the radar and always performs nicely!

Descent into Avernus

This enchantment is not for every deck of course. However, in decks that can abuse the damage triggers (Torbran, Neheb) this enchantment is very scary. As it grants treasures to all players, it usually sticks on the field for several turns. However, you can be fairly sure that the player casting it will be miles ahead of the table very shortly!

Drift of Phantasms

This card is just insane in the right decks. The creature itself is of course not the focus here. Note that transmute is an ability, which only with a few specific cards can be countered / interacted with. It can tutor any mana value 3 card to your hand directly. A lot of scary cards happen to have mana value 3! This common never lets you down and is a criminally underrated card in EDH.
