Living Death Rulings Explained

In what order do ETB effects resolve when Living Death is played? Can you target creatures that entered the battlefield via Living Death? See the example in this article to find out how to deal with Living Death’s Rulings.

Graveyards

In our example we have 3 players.

Turn steps

  1. Player 1 casts Living Death, it is put on the stack, all players pass priority and it resolves.
  2. All creatures are put from the graveyard onto the battlefield at the same time, as stated in the official rulings of Living Death.
  3. With the creatures on the board, the ETB triggers have to be stacked. Starting with the active player (in our example this is player 1) the ETB triggers are put on the stack in turn order.
    1. Player 1 puts Dockside Extortionist‘s trigger on the stack.
    2. Player 2 has to target a creature in order to put Phyrexian Metamorph‘s trigger on the stack. Since all creatures have entered the battlefield at the same time, the Metamorph could not choose a target as it entered and will enter as a 0/0 and dies.
    3. Player 3 puts Ravenous Chupacabra‘s trigger on the stack, targeting the Dockside Extortionist.
  4. Everyone passes priority and the triggers will resolve in reverse turn order order.
    1. Ravenous Chupacabra destroys Dockside Extortionist.
    2. Player 2 does nothing.
    3. Player 1 creatures treasures from Dockside Extortionist‘s trigger (although the body is gone, the trigger was already on the stack)
