Top 10 Mono Red Dragons In EDH

Mono red is by far the most dominant color when it comes to the dragon tribe. There are a total of 135 dragons in mono red, followed by blue with a current total of 29 dragons. So what are the best mono red dragons to run in your EDH deck?

Although there is a lot of Commander support for dragons in other colors these days, and one of the most played commanders of all time being The Ur-Dragon, according to us mono red is where the true raw power of these beasts lie.

This list is a shoutout to all the Hellkites and Shivans that are terrorising your playgroup.

10. Drakuseth, Maw of Flames

Drakuseth is not the most interesting Dragon on this list but it’s great for basic spot removal. You can hit up to 3 targets, including Planeswalkers which is great. Especially if you’re running a mono red Dragon deck I would not skip over this card.

9. Utvara Hellkite

If your board can survive one or two turns with this card on it, you’ll have a dragon army. If you attack with this plus any other dragon, you will have 4 Dragons, and the turn after that 8 etc. The only downside is that it is a little slow, but once it starts going it can be a great finisher.

8. Thunder Dragon

Imagine blowing up all your opponents’ mana dorks, hatebears or small tokens by dropping this, while your board stays alive? Seven mana is a steep price, but it can be a game changer when you drop it at the right moment.

7. Goldspan Dragon

Thanks to Treasures, red players are getting more and more ramping possibilities. Goldspan Dragon does exactly that, and on top of that it doubles the mana your treasures give. It’s a great addition to any Dragon deck, especially a mono red one.

6. Hellkite Courser

This Dragon brings out your Commander with haste, which in the right deck can be absolutely insane. If your Commander is The Ur-Dragon and you already have some Dragons on the board, Hellkite Courser is the card that you want to cast.

5. Lathliss, Dragon Queen

Really great if you have a mass haste enabler out like Dragon Tempest, because that enables you to attack with all your tokens right away. Don’t underestimate the second ability either, pumping your team can prove very crucial in the late game stage.

4. Ancient Copper Dragon

We loving ramping in EDH and when this mono red dragon connects, there is a big chance you will get showered in treasures. On average it will give you 10 of them, which is an insane amount of ramp. The six mana cost is absolutely worth it and in a Dragon deck you will probably cast it for less or cheat it out with a card like Sneak Attack.

3. Terror of the Peaks

The first clause is nothing special, but the second one can get out of hand fast. This card synergies really well with Dragon token generators like Lathliss, Dragon Queen and Utvara Hellkite. With every token that enters the board you can blast ANY target for 5 or 6 damage per token.

2. Balefire Dragon

A one player repeatable board wipe stapled on a 6/6 Flying Dragon body. This goes so well in any Dragon deck, and with this thrown in you can cut out a regular board wipe so you can run more Dragons as a whole.

1. Scourge of the throne

Extra combat step spells like Relentless Assault are essential in any creature heavy aggro deck, so what’s better than having that ability stapled onto a big Dragon? If you give this thing haste, Scourge of the Throne can cause such an explosive turn that your opponents don’t know what hit ’em.
